ELA

We have many components to ELA (English Language Arts). These components are:

1. IRA (Interactive Read-Aloud)- We will do IRA from daily. Students will learn lots of vocabulary during this time as well as hear Mr. Hippen model thinking and comprehension strategies. We will take vocabulary quizzes over the words we learn. Students will get a hard copy of the words. I will try to post them to my blog as well. Our first read-aloud will be My Life in Dog Years by Gary Paulsen.

2. Small Groups- Each day I will have two groups of students in a small group. Some groups may meet daily. Others may be 1, 2, or 3 times a week. This will be guided by me. All students will read the same book as we go over fluency, word work, and comprehension.

3. Foundational Skills-  We will also use Vocabulary Surge to learn about Latin and Greek roots as well as affixes (prefixes and suffixes).

4. Writing- We will be learning how to write three different pieces this year- argument or opinion, informational, and narrative. These are longer units. We have approximately 20 minutes each day devoted to writing.

5. Shared Reading- We have shared reading daily from 11:50-12:25. We use National Geographic Panorama to teach the comprehension standards. All students will be using the same text, which will be accessed using either a hard copy or on their Chromebooks. These lessons will focus on vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.
